Next Month!

As the title states, I will be setting up a New domain and VPS for a U.S. based Friendica Server setup. I've narrowed down two likely VPS host that may suit my needs.

Now the only thing to decide, is what to do with this "hub", I could convert it to Dev and be rocking the latest .. or make it disappear altogether.

This Error.

Any know what's up with this error in my logs?

[Thu Feb 08 16:20:32.055945 2018] [:error] [pid 22247] [client 10.0.0.3:59614] PHP Warning: session_write_close(): Failed to write session data (user). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct (/var/lib/php/sessions) in /var/www/boot.php on line 908
Yes, we fixed it a while ago on develop. If you want to keep your instance on the stable branch, please wait for the 3.6 release in the upcoming month (hopefully).

PR #526

@Friendica Support

Created PR For friendica/friendica-addon/gravatar Addon.
This entry was edited (2 weeks ago)
Thanks for the work, your issue was triggered by the renaming of everything plugin into addon last month, and the update mechanism didn't trigger an addon reload like expected.

Or maybe it did, but before you updated your addon folder, which would miss entirely then.

I'm not on Dev-I'm on Tag v3.5.4

You submitted your PR against the develop branch of the addons, so I thought you switched. Please checkout the 3.5.4 tag of the addon repository to match your stable version of Friendica.

NameThingy

So I enabled the plugin for NameThngy, and it seems to redirect my browser after clicking on it in the "apps" options.

@Friendica Support Do you guys know anything about this, or is it not maintained by Friendica devs ?

iyfnzgb.com/?pid=9PO1H9V71&dn=namethingy.com

This addon simply is an iframe to that website, not more. I don't think that it really serves some useful purpose and would like to remove it from our repository.

@Michael Vogel I think there are several "ancient" addons that should be carefully looked into whether they are of any use so ever.

When you find one, please tell. Best is to make an issue at github for them, so that we don't forget about it.

Found this in Google from 2013 which matches the text description.

http://techwithlove.com/namethingy-gets-a-name-for-your-baby-pet-blog-band-more/

Namethingy.com currently redirects through a domain parking company to an online game, so the original site is probably gone.

@Friendica Support

When you guys do a git pull request for the newer git changes, what is your structure setup like. Are you guys pulling right to your /var/www/friendica folder. Or are you staging it in a separate folder than cp`ing it over?
This entry was edited (2 weeks ago)

@Michael Vogel What if I did a pull request for release tags, so that I get the latest release instead of the latest git repo commits ?

This would work!
git clone -b 'v3.5.4' --single-branch --depth 1 https://github.com/friendica/friendica

It would, but you don't need Git for that, you can directly download a Friendica archive either from https://friendi.ca or from the Github page.

I'm not sure why you are using Git but don't want the Git history?

The latest release is always available on the master branch.

So as long as I don't switch to develop branch, I can automate a checkout every 24 hours to be on the latest setup..

Master Branch doesn't appear to have been updated in as long as 4 months....

Yes, we usually release a new minor version 4 times a year, but due to the latest code refactoring project, we have been postponing the 3.6 release. But in essence, yes.

The full auto-update commands (develop or master) are the following in your Friendica folder:
  1.  git pull
  2.  util/composer.phar install
  3.  cd addon
  4.  git pull
  5.  cd ..

Correct, master is the stable version/release. This would be the equivalent of having version 3.5 waiting for 3.6, while develop is like having 3.5.5.3 then 3.5.5.5 and so on.

basically my update one-liner in my friendica directory looks like this
  1.  git pull && util/composer.phar install && cd addon && git pull && cd ..

@Friendica Support
Thought you might be interested in adding this tidbit to the wiki or some place publically facing.

Invalid Profile URL
So I've finally tracked down the issue for this. Found this lurking around in my error log. So it seems that nginx on my front facing server wasn't sending the .well-known requests to the apache2 backend server.

$ cat /var/log/apache2/error.log
[Sun Feb 04 22:02:12.694438 2018] [core:alert] [pid 28607] [client **.**.**.**:42302] /var/www/.htaccess: Invalid command '.htaccess:', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration, referer: http://s.taek.us/profile/taek

If you have this kind of setup where NGINX is a proxy server to an Apache2 server, make sure your nginx website config file doesn't contain the following
location ~ /.well-known {
allow all;
}

@Tobias That line should not exist in the nginx configuration file for the reverse proxy of the friendica site.
Image/photo

:facepalm thanks for that :-)

I've added a note to the sample file in /mods.

I will submit some sample docs later for nginx reverse proxy and apache2 samples

Finally, I was able to add @Friendica Support Not sure what changed but I am glad to be connected :D

Thanks @Adam Magness

@Steffen K9 Now you know that it "blocks?" contact requests inadvertently.

Registered a new TLD for this friendica node! Waiting for it to become active. I will be probably moving this thereafter to a VPS in the cloud!.
This entry was edited (3 weeks ago)

So does this mean you're not moving to a VPS?

@Adam Magness Magness I did manage to grab one of those free .tk T.L.D.s to test if I could swap domains on friendica without a re-install. I am still waiting for the friendica support and developers to add me so I can ask them.
This entry was edited (3 weeks ago)

The support and developers forums should automatically accept connection requests. But to answer your question, No, you can't change your domain, at least not keeping any connections. Everything is based on your taek@s.taek.us, so anyone that has you as a contact would have that in their db, and then they would just loose contact with you after you changed domains. So, basically it's move existing or start fresh with a new one. Unless someone else in the forums has a successful procedure for this...

@Adam Magness They didn't automatically accept my request. I just get the notification that I had "Introduced Myself".

That's correct, I "Introduced" myself when I clicked on their connect button.

I just posted in the support forum to see if there is an issue accepting new contact requests. In the mean time you could try going to your own contacts page, and on the side bar under Add new contact, enter the https address style of the forum and click connect. Minus the ? you see above after developers.

The only thing in my logs was something to do with /var/lib/php/sessions for sessions.save_path. from a call in /var/www/boot.php

@Adam Magness I am still looking at my options for VPS but I am hoping by next month no later.

New Workstation (Used)

Just picked up one of these Dell Precision 490 for U$D60.00
Dual-Quad-Core Xeon E5345 Processors @ 2.33 GHz
8/32 GBs of R.A.M.

Should be great for a work station with Ubuntu XFCE

I am going to try LXC/LXD Ubuntu 16.04.X in a VM for testing purposes. perhaps I will setup a Ubuntu Server at Church to run LXC. All In-House Usage.

Now that I got that last little rant post out.

I am thinking about switching to a different OS. My current setup is as follows
Dell PowerEdge 2950 II
Dual-Xeon CPUs
32 GBs R.A.M.
4x Gigabit Nics
VMWare ESXi 6.2.xxx

I have two ideas in mind, running a straight Debian install with OpenVZ and KVM or using Proxmox PVE 5.X Which now uses LXC and KVM. I am not sure what the major differences are between OpenVZ and LXC.

So apparently after updating to the latest #Friendica release the other day, it stopped accepting my passwd. I didn't have any kind of MTA installed. I had to setup and configure sendmail and other things so I can get a reset request email!.

Bummer, suffice it to say, I did all that during Church!

Site Update!

Just did a #Friendica update to the latest release, I think I will create a little shell script to automate updating. Just have to figure out how to automatically get the latest release that isn't -dev.

So it seems that the Social Network Connector is broken ? Went to try to setup my Facebook account and I get an Error 500 at /settings/connectors. Resulting in a white page in some browsers.
@Gabe. R. got to make sure you are on the most recent branch, whether you are on master or develop. Then depending on that which addons branch...

The Facebook Connectors seem to have been deprecated.

@Gabe. R. Ahh, well that answers that! The Twitter addon works though!
